Posted by Jan Howlett on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, In : Home Sweet Home
Hi All Artists Hearts,
While we wait for final approval to arrive from the original photographer who granted permission to use his work for the finished Watercolor, "The Last Rose of Summer"  let's start a new series called "Home Sweet Home-Finch's Garden.   Let me introduce you to some of the various components that will make up this sweet little composition.  The first photo is a manipulated compilation of several different photographs for the possible composition, including the Adonis blue ...

Carols Rose No. 9 Final

Posted by Jan Howlett on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, In : Carols Rose

Hello All Artist Hearts,
We finally received the gold frame after waiting many months for delivery.  It was well worth the wait to gain the look I was after for this particular painting. It was a quiet air of antique glory that I had hoped to accomplish to compliment Carol's Rose.  By choosing the soft green outer mat with a sub mat of soft pink beautifully set up this rose.

I tried one other colour scheme for a completely different feel with a deep navy blue that had the same Payne's Grey Bl...

Carol's Rose Watercolor by Jan Howlett Stage 8
Hi All Artist Hearts,
We have finally progressed to the final stages of Carol's Rose. A summer thunderstorm has just passed through the garden where this lovely rose abides and it is amazing that it has survived such turbulance!   But in a composition we can make just about any atmospheric condition we want and create beautiful survivors.  :>)
It's called artistic license.

Actually, many roses are very sturdy and do survive beautifully through many storms.  That is the case for our lovely rose...

Carols Rose Watercolor No 7 by Jan HowlettHello All Artist Hearts,
As promised here is the next stage completed for Carol's Rose.  A few hours behind schedule. But, better a little late than never.  It's been a busy few weeks and time for painting at a premium.  But here we are at last.

Before I get started I want to share a bit of exciting news that we announced only yesterday on our website... that we are planning to create a teaching Art Video on "The Art of Painting Beautiful Roses One On One," and would like to includ...

Carols Rose Watercolor Stage 6 by Jan HowlettCarols Rose Watercolor Stage 5 to compare to 6
 Hi All Artist Hearts,
The layers are building quickly now on this delightful rose study. Some of the values are deepening significantly allowing me to add in the shadows cast over the upper part of the under rose leaves, setting the rose forward 3 dimensionally.   I have included stage 5 beside the current photo for you to see just how far the rose has come.  The yellows are calmer and more natural....closer to the actual color of this rose.

The shapes and curves of the petals are taking on a ...

Watercolor by Jan Howlett-Stage 5 of Carols RoseHi All Artist Hearts,
Happy New Year everyone!  It's that time of year when we can approach life and the things we hope to accomplish with fresh eyes and renewed motivation.  We can start a brand new clean page and work toward our goals and plan to learn with fresh vigor.  It can be an exciting time.

One of the ways we can continue to be inspired and grow our resolve to be on the lookout for new ideas that will foster new compositions for our portfolio or our planned list of art goals is to wat...

Carols Rose No. 4

Posted by Jan Howlett on Saturday, December 11, 2010, In : Carols Rose
Hi All Artists Hearts,
It's been longer than I intended between posts, but with the Christmas rush and build up, life has been very busy. However, Carol's Rose is developing nicely and it is starting to take on that lovely glow we all work to achieve in our paintings.  Each layer is like adding another jewell to a beautiful broach, and with each addition the setting is enhanced and enriched, increasing it's value.

Watercolor Carol's Rose Stage 4Especially notice the inner petals of this rose.  The layers are only a couple at...
