Family Affair Bald Eagle No. 19

Posted by Jan Howlett on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, In : Family Affair WC

Hi All Artist Hearts,
We are nearing the final stages of this painting before we start making plans to choose the complimentary mats and frame and special Bible verse that goes with this special composition.  There are only a few more stages left to post before we start another new series.

The sky has been developed substantially including the river and land below the nest site. The addition of the river will add that important element describing the height and perspective of the nest compared ...

Hi All Artist Hearts,
Have you ever tried to build or duplicate a Bald Eagle's Nest? Whew!
I've finally finished another new stage in our "Family Affair" series. A lot of work has gone into this stage including the beginning layers for the background, sky and some of the many facets of the Eagle's Nest and the materials

used to create it.  Painting this kind of nest requires a lot of patience and a steady hand.It is far from being finished, but at least the interpretation of what reads as a...

Bald Eagle painting photo progress of colors  Hi All Artist Hearts,  Family Affair's Papa Eagle is really taking shape now. Several more layers have been applied so the feather groups are more defined and recognizable.

The use of hard and soft edges is very important to describing the feathers as soft and pliable in some areas and strong and durable in other areas.

Watch for the next installment.  In the meantime enjoy your painting days.
Blessings, Jan.

Bald Eagle painting in first stages
Hi All Artist Hearts...New update!
More paint to paper ready for those following this series.  I have just continued with the first layers of the same colors as an undercoat preparing for the next deeper colors to describe the feather groups and the tree limbs.  The remaining twigs and branches will be painted in the same manner.

Along the way I will make the necessary adjustments to add darker passages in various areas towards creating shadows.  I have also deliberately paved the way to allow...

Male Bald Eagle Sketch-1st layers painted
Hi All Artist Hearts!  Finally Paint to Paper!!

All the major research and problem solving for the composition for Family Affair is completed.  Finally I am at the most fun part of the entire process....PAINT TO PAPER!   I know you have all been waiting patiently for this day and now we can get to the heart of this piece and enjoy the rest of the process.

The first base layers is a very simple combination of Van Dyke Brown and Thalo Blue, giving me a soft cool sepia tone for all the underside ...

Hi All Artist Hearts,
The final sketch of "Family Affair" has finally been transferred onto my art paper (140 Lb. Hot Press Arches)
soaked in a water bath for about 3 or 4 minutes and mounted onto my art board (lightweight Gator Board).  It is drying as I write.  This is always an exciting stage, knowing that I am all that much closer to laying paint to my paper!  But, before I do that, I just wanted to share a couple of extra steps that I did before I could say that my composition was complet...

New Male Eagle Sketch for Family Affair paintingHi Artist Hearts,  I have been working hard to redraw my male Eagle as promised.  If you look carefully you can just make out the original shape underneath my new drafting paper sketch.  I have also included all the detailing needed for the feather groups that would be seen on the inside of the wing particularly in this open position.  I also changed the position of the legs and especially the feet.  I wanted them to show more movement and life. The original legs and feet seemed too static fo...

Hi All Artists Hearts,
The planning and preparation for this painting continue behind the scenes and I thank you for your patience.  In the meantime I thought I would share my choice of paintbrushes that I will use for this painting.

I already know that I will want to use a brush that will give me plenty of control and ability to sustain a good flow of water and pigment throughout my glazing process.  This is especially important when it comes to painting in the feather groups of each Bald Eagl...

Hello all Artist Hearts,
Finally the rough thumbnail sketch we have all been waiting for is done!  All the individual segments have been knit together.  The seed idea for this painting started way back in 2008 and is only now being completed.  Some pieces take longer than others to gel together, whether the delays come in the form of research or other responsibilities demand our time...sooner or later that idea presses in and cries for attention.  This is good though because when you c...

Male Bald Eagle landing feet Hi All Artist Hearts.  Just stopping in to share a short and final segment of the preliminary sketch for our Bald Eagle family.   We are just concentrating on the male Eagle's landing feet (which will be more polished by the time we get to the painting stage) as they might appear on the major branch framing the entrance to the nest where Baby and Mom Eagle are enjoying progress on a daily lesson in nest building and the laws of Eagle architecture.  We are very close now to presenting the ent...

Female Bald Eagle Sketch  Hi Artist Hearts, your next rough sketch installment is ready.  Here is the second component to our "Family Affair" painting.  The female Bald Eagle is in her nesting posture.  Her wings are posed in her protective and nurturing stance.  The sketch only contains the basic outline of her body and will have to be completed in the next days to come.  This is the actual placement she will take within the composition when it is finished.

Baby Eaglet will eventually sit nestled in the front of Mom...

Baby Eaglet  Hello All Artist Hearts,  I thought I would wet the appetite of our viewers by introducing the first rough sketch of one of the major components of my Bald Eagle composition.  As it progresses and other parts of the picture are added it may be very difficult NOT to rename my painting!  I do have several titles in mind.  I may even have to think about opening the title up to you all for a vote.  We will see how it goes.

That said, the first emotional factor contributing impact in this story i...

Bald Eagle feathers  As we continue our background research on the Bald Eagle and what we should include in our drawing and composition this next photo shows an intricate close up detailing each feather individually.  Observe the fine edges of each feather.  Observe the lighting source and how the location of that light effects the shadows being created by it's bouncing off the body and shaft of each feather.

The arrows on the photograph help us to see how the shadows lay.  They in turn draw our eyes into the cr...

Bald Eagle with Eaglet
Hello All Artist Hearts, We are back at the easel!
Family Affair
will hopefully become a delightful composition in Watercolor.  For some time I have been collecting information, photos and research on avian facts towards developing this new painting.  The photo is just one of many used for references to study the feather groups and their formations, compliments of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens website.  It is a fascinating study and as I go along I will share what I learn.  Watch for new pos...
