Carols Rose No. 8

Carol's Rose Watercolor by Jan Howlett Stage 8
Hi All Artist Hearts,
We have finally progressed to the final stages of Carol's Rose. A summer thunderstorm has just passed through the garden where this lovely rose abides and it is amazing that it has survived such turbulance!   But in a composition we can make just about any atmospheric condition we want and create beautiful survivors.  :>)
It's called artistic license.

Actually, many roses are very sturdy and do survive beautifully through many storms.  That is the case for our lovely rose...

Carols Rose Stage 3 Watercolor by Jan HowlettHi All Artists Hearts,
Carol's Rose is progressing nicely and we are now on Stage 3.  I have used Alizarin Crimson washed over both the Indian Yellow or Aureolin layers in some places, and pale washes of Purple Magenta over a few other areas. Both yellows still shine through the petals and reads as bathed and illumined by the sun.  At this point the mood does not reveal the storm and rain on the way: That will come later.

This beautifully shaped rose lends itself to use lovely soft blends and w...

Family Affair Bald Eagle No. 17

Posted by Jan Howlett on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, In : Family Affair WC

Hi All Artist Hearts,
Have you ever tried to build or duplicate a Bald Eagle's Nest? Whew!
I've finally finished another new stage in our "Family Affair" series. A lot of work has gone into this stage including the beginning layers for the background, sky and some of the many facets of the Eagle's Nest and the materials

used to create it.  Painting this kind of nest requires a lot of patience and a steady hand.It is far from being finished, but at least the interpretation of what reads as a...

Watercolor-Sue's Begonia Stage #10
Good day all Artists Hearts.
Well, we are nearing the final post on this intricate painting before we begin a new one.  Many details have been added and completed while others are still in process. You will notice that one sprig of blue flowers has been transformed into a small leaf near the top center of the composition.

In fact, now the veins have been greatly emphasized to reveal the characteristic deep veining trait commonly known to the Begonia family. The addition of the darker sh...

Watercolor-Sue's Begonia Stage 9bRough Sketch for Blue Flowers Stage 9a
A double posting for all our Artist Hearts today.
See the benefits of a blustery cold wet day?  Double Blessings!   This installments shows the deep veined leaves developing nicely as well as the addition of tiny blue flowers into the composition to add interest.  The little rough sketch of the blue flowers is also included as a thumbnail.  I ended up just using a few sprigs to enhance the painting.  Keep being inspired.  Stay tuned for the next posting.

Watercolor-Sue's Begonia Stage 8Hello Artists Hearts,
Another cool, windy Fall day that just cries out for us to find a cozy spot by fire to read or equally as inviting to get out our paintbrushes and settle in for an afternoon of blissful creative painting!   Well here is the next installment of "Sue's Glorious Begonia."  The many layers are starting to pay off richly, bringing forth the depth of shadows and highlights even more so than in earlier stages.

I will soon be able to start laying the washes in on the large veine...

Hello Artist Hearts-I'm back!

Js Easel Notes #5

Watercolor Sue's Begonia-Stage 5  Greetings all Artists Hearts,
I've finally found time to construct and load in the next installment of Sue's Begonia Watercolor in process.  There are several new layers or veils of color applied now and the impact and depth is quite noticeable.   It's a long process to bring our original one dimensional sketch into becoming a 3 dimensional painting.  A long way to go to accomplish the finished floral, but indeed a joy to do.

So far I've incorporated some new colors: Sap Green, Lemon Yellow, ...

Watercolor Sue's Begonia-Stage 4  Artist Hearts Update: Here's the promised photo of our Begonia Sketch with its very first layers of color glazes.  (We started with New Gamboge, Indian Yellow and Alizarin Crimson, but these colors will soon be transformed into deeper mauve pinks that compliment my client's decor.) Already these first few pale layers have begun to transform our one dimensional drawing.  Some of the floral shapes now clearly suggest to us where the highlights and future shadows will work to bring life and li...

Hello again all Artists Hearts,
I was delayed somewhat in posting this third installment of 'Easel Notes,' but here we go.   Since gathering the swatches and color thumbnails I have worked further on fine tuning the pencil sketch for Sue's Begonia and it is now safely transferred onto 140 lb. Arches Hot Press art paper and mounted securely onto my Gator foam board ready to receive the first initial veils of foundation washes.

These first glazes will set the under tone and value properties for m...

Hello Artist Hearts,  The process continues...

Photo-Sue's Drape & Rug sampleAs promised the samples for the Begonia composition have arrived.  In this photo you can see the beautiful filtered light shining through the sheer drapery with a touch of the burgundy color from the rug reflected into the mix as well.  I have determined that the lit portion inside this oval would be the perfect color mix for the small buds.  The sunlight showing through its transparent petals will have a glowing effect.  An excellent illustrati...

Original Pencil Sketch for Sue's Begonia Watercolor Hello fellow Artist Hearts,
As you may have noticed our last entry  posted  for "Tidbits for The   Artist Heart web page" included my first pencil sketch of Sue's Begonia composition as seen here in the above thumbnail.

Since then Sue provided me with a sample piece of her burgundy rug and a swatch of wallpaper to assist in color matching to compliment her decor.  She also provided me with a lovely photograph of the sun softly filtering through her sheers giving us a wonderful snapshot...
