Watercolor Harmonizing Down By The Pond by Jan Howlett
Hi All Artists Hearts,
"Harmonizing Down by The Pond" is finally completed and now you can see all the individual segments that we have been studying all put together as a unit.  And so the story is complete.  I have been careful to include many of the research details discussed in earlier posts.  One of the more challenging parts of this painting, oddly enough, was the water and its reflections.  I wanted to be careful to have the pond and river to be contained and not flow out into an everla...

Watercolor by Jan Howlett called Harmonizing Down by The Pond-Stage 7Hi All Artists Hearts,
Well here is the star of the show sporting  his glorious aqua blue suit, the Red-Eyed Tree Frog!  He was so much fun to paint.  Once I have finished all the last minute details I will be able to post a final photograph of the entire piece hopefully in a better quality format for you.

You may wonder why I bother with research and fact-finding when bringing a composition together. You will understand later in this post.  So for now I realize you already know some facts, ...

Harmonizing Down by The Pond, Watercolor by Jan HowlettHi All Artist Hearts,

Here are a few basic facts on our typical Garden Green Frog as seen taking shelter by an old cracked clay pot here in our art oval sample. I wanted to include him in contrast to his colorful family friends.  He is a familiar find in many gardens and children just love capturing them for pets.
  • The garden green frog is 5.7 to 9 cm (2.25 -3.5")
  • Found in every eastern province (introduced to Newfoundland)
  • Call is a twang like a loose banjo string.
  • Calling begins in late sp...

Watercolor Small Red-Eyed Tree Frog by Jan HowlettHi All Artists Hearts,
Well we are now at Stage 5 of Harmonizing Down by The Pond.  Today we are focusing on 2 sections:The smaller of the 2 Red-Eyed Tree Frogs in this painting. as well as the Garden Green Frog.(See photo above.)

This little fellow is perched on the surface of a frond growing in the pond. He is not yet full grown and is captivated by his new friends nearby.  He is also surrounded by other plant life affording him some much needed shade and protection.

Young frogs are typica...

Hi All Artists Hearts,
We have been experiencing quite a heat wave in our cities the last few weeks and although very uncomfortable it certainly takes the "wait" out of the drying time for our paintings when it has been a dry heat.  But when the humidity has been high some days our painting layers have taken much longer to dry than others. Thankfully, we are getting relief now and finally enjoying lovely cool evenings for sleeping, at least for the moment anyway.

Our little 5" x 9" tree f...

Tree Frogs Stage 3 Watercolor by Jan Howlett
Hi All Artists Hearts,

Stage 3 shows good progress with our whimsical Watercolor, "Harmonizing Down by The Pond".  The first color pigmented washes have been laid in and now completely bone dry.  I used Cerulean Blue for the sky and pond passages and various summer greens for the start of the tropical fronds.  The soft layer of warm Indian Yellow under wash sets the stage for the mauve and pink sunset afterglow to come later.

We have concentrated on these first few layers to assist us in pin-...

Watercolor by Jan Howlett Titled 'Harmonizing Down by The Pond'
Hi All Artists Hearts,
Well it's time for a new update on our Tree Frogs.  We have gone from an idea to rough sketch to final sketch and now to the first layers of color to establish the under-painting.  I have used a pale veil of French Ultramarine Blue for the upper sky section (I like the soft granulation effect it will give) in preparation for creating an evening sky later.   The tropical plants in the pond and on land, the little garden frog and part of the middle sky were painted using ...

Harmonizing Down by The Pond No. 1

Posted by Jan Howlett on Saturday, March 30, 2013, In : Harmonizing Down by The Pond
Hi All Artist Hearts,
Well the cat is out of the bag... Did you figure out the subject from the clue I left you?  "What big eyes you have. All the better to see you with my dear."  We are talking about some amazingly colored tree frogs from the tropics and North America.  In particular I am referring to the Red-eyed Tree Frog and the Green Tree Frog. I have also included a common little garden frog to add interest and contrast.  At last I now have a working sketch as you will see below. The ba...
